Liver transplantation is the replacement of a spoiled liver with some or all of a healthy liver from a healthy person. The most commonly used method is orthotopic transplantation, in which the diseased liver is taken out and exchanged by the donor organ in the same location. Liver transplantation is a feasible treatment option for the sufferer who is at the end of his life or acute liver failure.

Typically three surgeons and two anesthesiologists are involved, with up to 4 supporting nurses. The surgical procedure is very demanding and ranges from 4 to 18 hours depending on the result.
