Rhinoplasty from $1,500 in Turkey, tummy tuck from $3,000 in India. A realistic guide to cosmetic surgery abroad — including what clinics won't tell you about risks and recovery.

Cosmetic surgery is the #1 driver of medical tourism by volume. Turkey alone performs over 1.2 million cosmetic procedures on international patients annually, followed by Thailand, India, South Korea, and Mexico. Best Countries by Cosmetic Specialty

Turkey — Hair Transplant & Rhinoplasty Capital

Istanbul performs more hair transplants than any other city on Earth. Over 500 licensed clinics. FUE/DHI techniques at 1/10th the US price. Also a major hub for rhinoplasty with thousands of surgeons specializing exclusively in nose reshaping.

South Korea — Face & Eyes

The world leader in facial contouring (jaw reduction, chin reshaping) and double eyelid surgery. Seoul's Gangnam district has the highest concentration of plastic surgery clinics globally. Premium pricing but unmatched expertise for facial procedures.

India — Body Contouring & Value

Lowest overall prices globally. Particularly strong in tummy tucks, liposuction, and body contouring after weight loss. NABH-accredited hospitals offer surgical-grade operating rooms — a step above the standalone clinics common in other destinations.

Thailand — The All-Rounder

Bangkok's Bumrungrad International is Asia's most famous medical tourism hospital. Thailand excels in breast procedures, facelifts, and gender-affirming surgery. Higher prices than India/Turkey but exceptional hospitality and patient experience.

Safety — What Clinics Won't Tell You

Cosmetic surgery tourism has a darker side that Instagram testimonials won't show you. Here's what to be aware of:

BBL has the highest mortality rate of any cosmetic procedure (1 in 3,000). It requires fat injection near major blood vessels. Only choose surgeons who use ultrasound-guided fat transfer and never inject fat below the muscle layer.
"All-inclusive packages" can mean cutting corners. When a clinic offers flights + hotel + surgery at an impossibly low price, something gives. It may be cheaper implants, less experienced surgeons, or shorter hospital stays than medically appropriate.
Combining too many procedures increases risk significantly. "Mommy makeover" packages (tummy tuck + breast augmentation + liposuction in one session) carry higher complication rates. A responsible surgeon will stage procedures if needed.
Revision surgery is expensive. If results don't meet expectations, correction surgery back home can cost 2–3x the original price. Factor this into your cost-benefit analysis.

How to Choose Safely — Red Flags vs Green Flags

Red Flags

  • No verifiable Google Reviews or Trustpilot presence
  • Surgeon has no board certification or won't share credentials
  • Pressure to book immediately with "limited slots" urgency
  • Only stock or heavily filtered before/after photos
  • No physical consultation before surgery — only WhatsApp messages
  • Prices 50% below the already-cheap local market average

Green Flags

  • Board-certified plastic surgeon (not a general surgeon doing cosmetics)
  • Hospital-based operating room (not a back-room clinic)
  • Detailed video consultation before you book
  • Hundreds of unfiltered before/after photos of real patients
  • Clear refund/revision policy in writing
  • Will advise against procedures that aren't appropriate for you
